Back by popular demand, this two day workshop is intended for ceramic artists and students with intermediate to advanced skills on the potters wheel. Hand builders are welcome. The goals of this workshop are to take the mystery out of crystalline glaze firings and make it approachable to the ceramic artist. These workshops have been producing stunning one of a kind crystals with several color combinations. The first day will cover 1) the construction of small bottle forms on the potters wheel, 2) presentation of different fired crystalline glazes, 3) demonstration of the assemblage of glazed bottles, pedestals, glaze catch bowls (which are imperative parts of the firing technique). The assembled demonstration pieces will be fired before the second workshop date. Students should make 6 small bottle shapes (bisque fired) before the second workshop date. Students should make ten small bottle shapes (bisque fired) as well as the pedestals and glaze catch bowls between the two workshop dates. The second day will cover: 1) glaze recipes, 2) glaze application, 3) assemblage of vessel, pedestal, and catch bowls, 4) discussion on firing schedule and the programming of digital controllers for firing crystalline glazes. Participants will leave this workshop with extensive information on forms for crystalline glazes, glaze application, firing techniques, and glaze recipes.
