POTTERY FOR BEGINNERS

Description: This newly offered class is meant to be and introduction to numerous pottery techniques. Throwing on the potters wheel and hand building techniques will covered. Numerous varieties of forms with function will be include in the instruction, i.e. cups, bowl, plates, platters, serving vessels, and vases. All students will have the opportunity to use CCW spectacular high fire glazes as well participate in a wood firing in our national renown Naborigama ( wood fired kiln)


WHEEL THROWING FOR BEGINNERS

Description: Focused on developing elementary wheel throwing techniques, students will learn to make several functional forms (i.e. plates, bowls, drinking vessels). Students will be instructed on decorating their wares with colored slips. Firing techniques will cover our spectacular high fire (cone 10) functional glazes.

Description: Animals are more naturally themselves than humans. Being uninhibited by the pressures of the human psyche, they show everything on the surface without awareness or doubt. Come let your inner animal out! In this 8 week sculptural class students will be introduced to the animal form through a variety of sculptural techniques. Demos will focus on developing a maquette (a scaled-down model of an intended work), building solid and hollowing out, and when (or when not) to use an armature. Special emphasis will be placed on developing a personal aesthetic, unique to each individual. In addition, we will explore surface patterning and texture for both realistic and decorative finishes, and students will be instructed on how to enhance and decorate their wares with colored slips and oxide stains, as well as how to glaze for gas reduction and wood/soda firings. Students of all levels are encouraged to participate in this new and adventurous class


COMPOSITION IN CLAY

Description:

In this exciting NEW class, students will be focusing on the integration of different construction techniques to create wonderfully dynamic and complex forms. Included will be demos and instruction on two different coil building techniques as well as slab construction techniques integrated with wheel thrown forms. All students are expected to have a confident background in throwing on the potters wheel as instruction on throwing will not be covered in this class.

Through the fusion of coil, slab and wheel thrown forms, students will be encouraged to construct sculptural and/or functional forms, i.e. candelabras, teapots, planters, serving vessels, and much more. Students are encouraged to explore the integration of techniques in a journey outside their comfort zone.

General Information and Policies:

  • FREE BENCH (Practice) TIME:
    Students enrolled in classes are encouraged and allowed to use our several classrooms at CCW for bench (practice) time - 7 days per week from 9am-8pm in accordance with the supplied bench time sheets. There are no fees incurred for bench time.
  • MATERIALS AND FIRING FEES:
    Clay: All students will receive a complimentary 25lb bag of clay at their first class. Additional bags of clay will be available for $25/bag. All clay used at CCW must be purchased at CCW. The only exceptions to this are selected workshops.
  • Firing Fees:
    All sculpture and wares will be measured before bisque firing. Adult students will incur a firing fee of 4 cents per cubic inch. Glaze, bisque and wood/salt are covered by this fee. These firing options and finishes are predetermined by the curriculum of the class for which the student is enrolled. This rate applies to wares made only during the class enrollment period. Higher rates apply to wares made outside of this period.
  • Register soon class sizes are small.
  • Tuition may be paid by cash, check, money order, Visa or Master Card. Registration is only considered complete when payment in full has been made. Partial payments and post dated checks are not accepted.
  • Classes without minimum enrollment will be canceled. CCW will notify students approximately 4 days prior to start of class. Full refunds are paid when class is canceled by CCW.
  • ALL clay used at CCW must be purchased from CCW.
  • Cancellation In the case of student cancellation requested no later than 14 days prior to the start date of a class, a refund will be issued minus a $50.00 cancellation fee. No refunds or credits will be given after that time.
  • Credits & refunds will not be granted for absences due to unexpected events or illness.
  • Class Cancellation In the case of an individual class cancellation, the instructor will be responsible for the rescheduling of the canceled class. In most cases the class will be rescheduled in the week following the end of the class.
  • Safety All students are expected to comply with the CCW guidelines for safety, maintenance and conduct.
